Frequently Asked Questions
About the syndicate
Each horse is owned by a syndicate of up to 100 owners, with every owner holding a 1% share.
You pay a joining fee and a fixed monthly contribution, and from that point on you’re part of the journey – from entries and declarations to raceday and beyond.
No previous experience is required. Just an interest in racing and a willingness to enjoy the ride.
Ownership experience
Ownership with Montefeltro is about being involved.
Owners receive regular updates via WhatsApp and Telegram — training reports, race plans, photos, videos, and the thinking behind where and why we run. If a plan is forming, you’ll hear it.
We request as many owners’ badges as each racecourse will allow and, where possible, purchase additional badges.
Syndicates are now well catered for at most tracks, so the chances of attending are generally good. If demand exceeds availability, badges are allocated by ballot to keep things fair.
Race placement, campaigning plans and longer-term decisions are made by Montefeltro Racing in consultation with the trainer.
Our job is to give the horse the best possible chance of success and to think carefully about where opportunities lie.
Owners are kept fully informed throughout, and we’re always happy to hear your views.
Costs
There are two elements:
Joining Fee – a one-off payment when you join. This includes your first month’s contribution.
Monthly Contribution – a fixed amount payable on the 1st of each month to cover training and running costs.
There are no hidden extras.
Your monthly payment covers the ongoing costs of keeping the horse in training, including:
– Training fees
– Routine veterinary and farrier costs
– Transport
– Public liability insurance
– Syndicate administration
Race entry fees and jockey riding fees are paid from prize money, if and when prize money is earned.
If prize money is insufficient to cover those fees, owners are not asked to make up the difference.
Contributions are fixed for the duration of each syndicate term.
If training fees change, contributions for any new term may be adjusted slightly – but never during a term you’ve already committed to.
Prize money
Prize money is distributed to owners in proportion to their 1% shares.
Race entry and jockey riding fees are deducted from prize money before distribution. If prize money is insufficient to cover those fees, owners are not asked to make up the difference.
Payments are typically made at the end of the syndicate term.
Insurance
Each horse carries equine public liability insurance.
Mortality, loss of use and veterinary fee insurance are not held unless specifically stated for a particular horse.
Racehorse ownership carries risk — part of the appeal is that nothing is guaranteed. We’ll always be straightforward about that.
At the end of the term
Towards the end of each term, we’ll decide whether to continue for another 12 months or to sell.
If ownership continues, owners can choose whether to stay involved for the next term. If you don’t continue, your involvement simply ends — no pressure, no penalty.
If sold, the horse will go through a public auction for transparency.
After sales costs are deducted, the net proceeds are distributed to owners in proportion to their 1% shares.
Yes. You can leave at any time by emailing us. Your involvement then ends and your share lapses with no further financial obligation.
Any prize money already earned will still be paid to you. Joining fees and monthly contributions are not refundable.
If a horse retires from racing due to injury, ability, or age, arrangements will be made in consultation with the trainer.
This may include rehoming or retraining for another discipline, depending on the individual. Owners are kept informed throughout.
When a horse retires from racing, the syndicate for that horse comes to an end.
